The powerlifter prepares for his first strongman performance.
You can count the number of athletes who have verifiably lifted 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds) with one hand and you would still have one finger free. Jamal Browner is one of the members of this very exclusive strength club. He raised this huge amount with his signature sumo deadliftbut he’s recently been working with a conventional stance to prepare for his first appearance as a strongman.
Browner will compete for the first time in the 2023 World Deadlift Championships, which is part of Giants Live 2023 open world strongman on September 2, 2023 in Cardiff, Wales, and it shows signs of steady progress. He offered proof of his steady strength gains by sharing a recent four-rep conventional deadlift with 410 kilograms (903.8 pounds)which you can see in the Instagram post published on June 29, 2023.
Browner came to the bar with a relatively close stance and his feet pointing straight ahead and grabbed the bar with the “figure-8” lifting straps bracket. According to the rules of strongman competitions, a sumo stance is not allowed, while lifting straps are allowed. This is a significant difference from the powerlifting that Browner is more familiar with. The only other support gear he wore was basic weightlifting belt.
Browner performed the first rep with ease and followed the second quickly. The third was slightly slower, but showed no major signs of difficulty. He took an extra breath before starting the fourth rep, but once that was over, he held the block for a few seconds before lowering the bar to the floor.
With around nine weeks to go until the contest, Browner said in the caption of the post that he felt good about his training and even estimated he could have added up to 10 kilograms to the barbell while performing the same reps with a similar effort.

Browner has pulled 435 kilograms (959 lb) for a bachelor in training as he becomes familiar with the conventional position. He has a long history of heavy lifting under his belt, but the recent challenge has been converting to the required conventional position.
Browner is only the second powerlifter to land a Deadlift 455 kilograms (1,003 pounds) at the 2022 United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) Raw Pro in September. A few months later, he pulled the same weight for two repetitions in training without the aid of lifting straps. Both were completed with a sumo stance.
The upcoming deadlift competition will also serve as the opening event for the Strongman World Open competition. The 2022 World Deadlift Championship (WDC) was won by Rauno Heinla, who lifted 476 kilograms (1,049.4 pounds) to also set a masters world record. Heinla will enter the contest to defend that title and try to win the all-around.
WDC Champion 2021 Ivan Makarov will also be looking for another title. Makarov himself recently shared an impressive training update as he lifted the current record – 476 kilograms (1,049 pounds) – for two reps.
While Browner will have to use conventional foot placement, he will also be allowed to use lifting straps as well as a combination deadlift, which could help him a lot in this contest.
