Adler is stepping up his athletic preparation after finishing in the top five last year.

Jeffrey Adler has been a staple of the annual CrossFit Games for what will be five consecutive years. After finishing in the top five in 2022, the Canadian athlete will now be looking to topple the two-time defending men’s individual champion (2021-2022) Justin Medeiros for the crown. Before officially earning his spot in the 2023 iteration of the Games, Adler surged into 2023 by winning the men’s CrossFit Open and the 2023 North America East Semi-Final. He will look to capitalize on this momentum in his training.

Stoltman looks like a champion on a mission.

The 2023 strongman season hasn’t exactly gone to plan for Tom Stoltman. Not only the former double World’s Strongest Man (WSM) Champion (2021-2022) lose on a legendary “three rounds” to Mitchell Hooperhe came in sixth place in the 2023 edition Arnold Strongman Classic (ASC) and was a finalist at the 2023 Giants Live Strongman Classic (GLSC) by a slim margin of half a point. Now officially without a professional strongman win for over a year, Stoltman’s winning drought is the longest of his career since initially breaking through with the 2021 WSM title, per Strongman Archives.

On July 20, 2023, Stoltman shared a sneak peek at how he’s gearing up to get out of his recent competitive rut. The athlete posted an Instagram clip where he completed an 800 kilograms (1,763.7 pounds) leg press. The telling feat of strength was all the more impressive, considering Stoltman affixed resistance bands to his machine and set up breaks between rehearsals for additional challenges. THE lower body workout is part of Stoltman’s bulk prep for the Shaw Classic 2023 (SC), taking place August 19-20, 2023 in Loveland, CO.

A Car Leg Press is one of the most eye-catching events at SC 2023, which is what Stoltman’s prep in the clip is likely tied to. In the 2022 edition, competitors were tasked with performing maximum reps with a 907-kilogram (2,000-pound) car loaded on a custom-made leg press and the winning performance was 8 reps.

Based on her Instagram profile, Stoltman doesn’t usually show previews of her prep before contests. In fact, most of Stoltman’s posts feature competition highlights, photos and collaborations with his older brother, Luke, another professional strongman. As Stoltman elaborates on what’s going on behind the scenes, the athlete appears to be deviating from the script and showing he could mean business at SC 2023.

That would line up with Stoltman’s thoughtful stance following the conclusion of WSM 2023, where he came within 4.5 points of another historic title. In the aftermath, the strong man explained that he “gave all he had” and was “proud” of his performance, but it was ultimately not enough for a win.

The 2023 SC will be Stoltman’s debut in the growing contest hosted by the four-time WSM champion (2011, 2013, 2015-2016) Brian Shaw. If Stoltman wins on his debut, he will not only have knocked down other notable competitors like 2020 WSM winner Hooper Oleksii Novikovand two-time defending SC champion Trey Mitchellbut he will also have earned the title of “The strongest man on earth.”

It would be quite the way for Stoltman to bounce back from a “sluggish” first half of 2023.

The year 2023 hasn’t turned out the way Stoltman originally envisioned it, but it’s not too late to save it and make it memorable. This strongman superstar isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and this leg press could be proof of just how much power he’ll show at SC 2023.

One of these women could ascend the throne in Toomey’s absence.

As the history books say, whenever a dynasty comes to an end, there will be a struggle to fill the huge power vacuum. After a dominant reign as the Fittest Woman on Earth® six times, Tia Clair Toomey will not be defending his title at the August 2023 CrossFit Games. The athlete has not retired and may well return to the limelight soon enough post-pregnancy, but for at least one edition of the Games, his throne will be vacant. It reminds me of the question of who can climb the mountain.

As the Games 2023, here is a list of five potential contenders for the women’s individual title. Toomey leaves behind some size shoes to fill, but one of these athletes could prove quite capable soon enough.

Potential individual competitors for the 2023 CrossFit Games

Just because Toomey won’t be present at the latest iteration of CrossFit’s flagship competition doesn’t mean there aren’t worthy competitors waiting in the wings. Here is a brief profile and overview of a few to consider.

Laura Horvath (Hungary)

  • Best finish: Finalist (2018, 2021)
  • Games debut: 2018

Horvath has had a relatively constant place among The elite of CrossFit since the time she started competing in Madison, WI. Now entering her seventh edition of the Games, some might consider the 2022 podium runner-up to be the women’s favorite overall with the absence of Toomey and Mal O’Brien. After a third place in European semi-final 2023 and a second place overall in the quarter-finals, Horvath looks ready to finally break through after three podiums (2018, 2021-2022).

Annie Thorisdottir (Iceland)

  • Best finish: Champion (2011-2012)
  • Beginning: 2009

A living legend of CrossFit, it’s been a long time since Thorisdottir stood at the pinnacle of the sport. A former two-time women’s individual champion (2011-2012), injuries and pregnancy halted much of Thorisdottir’s progress in the sport midway through the last decade. However, in recent years, “Iceland Annie” has begun to regain her form. After missing out on the cut in 2019 and 2020, Thorisdottir came third in 2021 and ventured into team competition in 2022, where she placed fourth as captain of Team CrossFit Reykjavik. These days, the 33-year-old might be considered more of a dark horse as she returns to individual competition.

However, few ‘dark horses’ already have two league titles and two second-place finishes to their name.

Emma Lawson (Canada)

  • Best finish: Sixth place (2022)
  • Beginning: 2022

At just 18 years old, Lawson approaches CrossFit competition like a seasoned veteran. The 2022 CrossFit Rookie of the Year and 2021 Games champion in the girls division (16-17), Lawson stormed to sixth place on her debut in the women’s division. Usually, potential Games champions have a bit more experience before they finally break into the bigger stage. However, with much of the women’s division seemingly evolving, this could work to Lawson’s advantage as the exceptionally young and bright possible first-time winner.

Arielle Loewen (USA)

  • Best finish: 11th place (2022)
  • Beginning: 2021

Loewen is another top contender who would certainly qualify more naturally under a dark horse or “surprise” tag. Unlike other potential winners, Loewen doesn’t have a big-name trophy accolade and arguably has a less high-profile resume overall, having never broken into the top 10. That said, a third-place finish in the North America West Semi-Final and third place overall in the world in the quarterfinals paint a picture of an athlete ready to soar. His third appearance at the Games in 2023 could be that momentous opportunity.

Gabriela Migała (Poland)

  • Best finish: Sixth place (2021)
  • Beginning: 2019

An experienced Games veteran, Migała has seemingly only improved since entering the women’s division at the end of the last decade after reaching the podium in 2016 in the girls’ division (16-17). For someone who has never even landed a podium in the women’s competition, Migała’s reputation almost precedes her. She is trained with the strongest man in the world Hafthor Björnsson, and seems to be an athlete waiting for that last stepping stone. Notably, Migała or Horvath would be the first Eastern European individual champion in the entire history of the contest.

These elite athletes know hard work.

The HWPO (Hard Work Pays Off) team is one of the many arms of Fittest Man on Earth®, fivefold Mat Fraser’s Growing Organization. Based on a preview of a recent training camp, Fraser appears to be using his experience and resources to groom top contenders and prepare them for the CrossFit Games 2023from August 1 to August 6.

On July 13, 2023, the Buttery Bros posted a video on their YouTube channel where they visited the HWPO team while preparing for their camp. Under Fraser’s leadership were CrossFit Games veterans – two-time Fittest Woman on Earth® Katrin Davíðsdóttir, top 10 finalist Jayson Hopper and Christine Kolenbrander (making her second appearance as a female individual competitor).

Here’s a look at the dynamic drills Fraser and Co. are doing in their camp ahead of the 2023 Games.

headstand practice

The day’s practice began with the assembled team performing a variety of handstand exercises. The path included a handstand step to go up and down a ramp, a handstand pushup, a pirouette (perform a 360 degree turn while holding a handstand), a second handstand pushup, and a final climb and descent on the ramp.

Fraser also participated in this training and soon developed a friendly rivalry with Hopper to the point of betting five dollars to see which athlete could complete the course in the least amount of time. Hooper picked up a win over the winningest champion in Games history. However, when the pair attempted a ‘double or nothing’ attempt, both elite competitors suffered technical breakdowns and neither completed the course one last time.

Scarecrow Snatch, Power Clean and Back Squat

Hopper asked the Buttery Bros to join him for a scarecrow snippets. The athlete worked up to 84 kilograms (185 pounds). Hopper revealed that he was relatively new to Olympic weightlifting and his technique apparently leaves something to be desired. Fraser, a national weightlifting champion prior to his CrossFit training, helped him with this aspect of his training.

Davíðsdóttir and Kolenbrander led the Buttery Bros through power cleans, eventually finishing at 95% of their respective one-rep maximums. To close this strength session item segment, everyone played squats, working up to a maximum of five reps, taking three seconds to lower the first rep followed by traditional speed with the next four reps. Several participants hit the 136 kilogram (300 pound) range.

Echo Bike Sprint Interval

The next part featured the team going through 12 sprint and echo bike intervals every 90 seconds – a variation of EMOM training. The goal for the women was to burn eight calories in 15 seconds. The goal for men was to burn 12 calories in the same amount of time. They closed out this interval and functional portion of the morning with 15 legless rope climbs.

Sprint Metabolic Conditioning

Once the athletes had eaten a meal and recovered, they returned for an afternoon session centered around an AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) format. It was six sets with a 2.5 minute work period, resting 2.5 minutes after each set:

  • Standing bike — Women: 12 calories | Men: 16 calories
  • 12 Burpee Box Jumps
  • Four squat snatches Women: 61 kilograms (135 pounds) | Men: 93 kilograms (205 pounds)
  • Max Ring Muscle Ups

According to Fraser, the goal was to get the athletes’ heart rate up on the bike, fatigue with burpees, perform a technical move on the squat snatch, and then push for fatigue with muscle-ups.

Games-style training

After apparently “softening up”, Fraser asks his group to perform a practice session reminiscent of something that would happen at the Games. They completed four laps of two handstand walking ramps, barbell thrusters and 400-meter runs. The thrusters increased in weight and reps with each round. They started at five reps with 43 kilograms (95 pounds) and ended at 11 reps with 56.7 kilograms (125 pounds).

Outside

Finally, to close the day of the camp, Davíðsdóttir and Hopper achieved the exploits outside. They started with a 300-meter (984-foot) lake swim, followed by 21 repetitions of doubles kettle bell snippets, 21 double kettlebell reps front squats,. The next round required another swim with 15 reps of each exercise, then a third swim with 9 reps per exercise and a final swim.

Fraser’s group appear to be ready and willing to put in the hard work needed to capitalize on their upcoming Games appearance. At the very least, from a training standpoint, they seem up to the task.
