If you do makeup frequently, you probably have a collection of makeup brushes that serve a variety of purposes. From foundation to blush, contour, eye shadow and eyeliner, it seems like every step of our beauty routine calls for a different brush style (or maybe you’re a one-brush girl, I’m not judging!).

But here’s the thing: do you know how often you should clean these brushes? It’s a well-known fact that the majority of people don’t wash their makeup brushes as often as they should. Bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil can build up quickly, leading to clogged pores, increased breakouts, and even potential health risks. Dirty makeup brushes can cause serious infections like fungal infections, E. Coli, or staph infections. That’s why I recommend cleaning your brushes once a week for clearer, healthier skin (and never sharing your brushes with anyone else!). Plus, washing your brushes frequently helps maintain their quality and keep them soft!

There are designated products that can be used to clean your makeup brushes, and these generally do a great job. But if the idea of spending more money on an additional product is holding you back, I have good news! Your facial cleanser can also be used as a makeup brush cleanser. Keep reading to discover a simple five-step process for cleaning your makeup brushes with a daily cleanser.

What kind of cleanser to use for makeup brushes

To clean makeup brushes, I recommend using a sulfate-free gel cleanser.

Cleansing gels are very simple and are meant to cut through oil and rinse away debris, which is perfect for makeup brushes. It’s also a nice bonus to know that your cleanser only uses skin-friendly ingredients.

To clean makeup brushes, my go-to is the Protective cleanser against moisture. It’s an effective, no-frills cleanser that does a great job of cleansing skin while keeping it hydrated. It’s free of sulfates, which can be harsh or drying, so it’s gentle on skin and makeup brush bristles.

A step-by-step guide

Step 1:

Start by filling a shallow bowl with lukewarm water. Next, add 1 tablespoon of a gentle, sulfate-free gel cleanser.

Be sure to avoid the ingredients Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate as these harsh detergents can dry out the hair’s natural bristles.

2nd step:

Shake your brushes in the bowl for 60 seconds. You should see the water foaming and darkening from the makeup of the brushes. For a good lather, you can also gently massage the tip in the palm of your hand.

Step 3:

Drain the water and fill your bowl with lukewarm water only. Again, rotate your brushes for 60 seconds. Repeat if necessary until the water runs clear.

Step 4:

Remove your brushes and squeeze out any excess water. Next, wipe your brushes back and forth on a clean, dry towel to absorb as much moisture as possible.

Step 5:

Finally, lay your brushes on a clean paper towel and let them dry. Personally, I like to have them in a sunny spot because the sunlight destroys bacteria and helps your brushes dry faster!

Ultimately, cleaning your makeup brushes could potentially be one of the most important steps in your beauty routine. Not only will this prevent rashes and unwanted infections, but it will also extend the life of your brushes, saving you money in the long run. Trust me, I know as well as anyone that beauty routines can get pretty long, but adding this step to your routine can help ensure a flawless, healthy-looking complexion every time.

What about makeup sponges?

Many people (including myself) like to use makeup sponges to apply foundation. So can you use your facial cleanser to clean your makeup sponges? As tempting as it may be, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Because makeup sponges are absorbent, they are much harder to clean than brushes. Using a facial cleanser can remove makeup and oil from the outermost layer, but it won’t really be able to penetrate deeper into the sponge where many bacteria reside.

Instead, I suggest using something stronger, like Dawn or a designated Beauty Sponge Cleanser. These are stronger and have a bigger lather than facial cleansers. Just be sure to rinse and dry your sponge thoroughly after cleaning it to ensure none of those powerful cleaning products get on your skin.

Let’s not stop at makeup brushes. Keep reading to ensure you’re washing your face the right way!

Do you need to wear sunscreen indoors? – Beautiful with brains https://unitedcarehealth.com/do-you-need-to-wear-sunscreen-indoors-beautiful-with-brains/ https://unitedcarehealth.com/do-you-need-to-wear-sunscreen-indoors-beautiful-with-brains/#respond Tue, 11 Jul 2023 13:33:18 +0000 https://unitedcarehealth.com/do-you-need-to-wear-sunscreen-indoors-beautiful-with-brains/ [ad_1]

Do you also have to wear sunscreen indoors? We all know that applying sunscreen before leaving the house, even though just running errands or walking the dog is an absolute must to protect your skin from sun damage and the wrinkles it inevitably causes. But what about wearing sunscreen indoors?

If you never leave the house, or just go back and forth to pick up your daily bread, is it worth putting on sunscreen – or are you just wasting precious produce? After all, sunscreen bottles are incredibly small for the amount of product you need to use each day, so if you can save a little, why not? And even…. those pesky UV rays can get to you even when you’re sitting near a window or driving a car. Well, some of them can… Here’s what dermatologists say about the need to wear sunscreen indoors:

Can you get a sunburn indoors?

I’m old enough to remember when sunscreen was just for the beach. At the time, the consensus was that sunscreen only served to prevent sunburn. We didn’t yet know the fast powers of the sun and going outside on a hot day without protection would mean you would have wrinkles and dark spots at an increasingly younger age. So if the sun wasn’t hot enough to burn your skin, you skipped the sunscreen. *sighs*

Is there any chance that the sun’s rays are so strong indoors? Even if you sit all day in front of your desk with a large window, can the sun’s rays pass through and burn your skin? Yes and no. Let me explain. UV rays can most certainly pass through windows. They did research on drivers showing that the side of your face next to the window develops wrinkles and dark spots and ages faster than the rest of your face. But they didn’t get a sunburn. How is it possible?

There are two types of UV rays. While all damage the skin, UVA rays are primarily responsible for premature aging while UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn. Only UVA rays can get through windows, which is why you can get wrinkles but not sunburn indoors. But it doesn’t require you to wear sunscreen inside.

Related: What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

How effective is your sunscreen? Sign up for the newsletter below to receive the “Sunscreen Audit” worksheet and find out if your sunscreen really measures up:

Do you really need to wear sunscreen indoors?

So if you can’t get sunburned inside the house or office, do you really need to wear sunscreen indoors? The short answer is yes. “Glass windows filter out UVB rays (but) UVA rays can still penetrate through your windows, which is harmful to your skin,” says Michele Green, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist. The A in UVA is for aging. These rays are responsible for premature wrinkles and dark spots.

The worst part? They don’t even age your whole face at the same rate! If you look at the face of someone who has been driving cars or vans for a living for years, you will notice that one side of his face – the side closest to the car windows – has twice as many wrinkles and dark spots! The verdict is clear: you may think that not wearing sunscreen indoors is harmless, but all that unprotected sun exposure is adding overtime — and it’s not pretty.

Want to know something even scarier? UVA rays also increase your risk of skin cancer. Do not take any risk !

Can sunscreen protect you from blue light?

Blue light is light emitted by screens, including laptops, phones, and televisions. Not all sunscreen protects you from blue light. They must contain either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide or both to do the job well. According to a study published in the British Journal or Dermatology“products containing microfine titanium dioxide are likely to provide superior photoprotection” against UV radiation compared to other sunscreen formulations.

In case you were wondering, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two mineral filters that provide broad-spectrum UV protection. Unlike chemical filters, they are very gentle on the skin and do not cause negative reactions even in people with sensitive skin. The problem? They have a greasy texture and can leave a white cast. Luckily, brands are learning how to get rid of these unwanted side effects, so we can enjoy them without our faces turning to white paste.

Do you need to reapply sunscreen indoors?

Now you know that you should also wear sunscreen at home or in the office. But do you need to reapply it often too? You absolutely have to…but not as often as you would need to if you were wearing it at the beach.

“UV rays seep into our rooms in ways we may not expect. Windows and doors do not filter out some UV rays and can damage skin,” explains Nava Greenfield, MD, dermatologist at the Schweiger Dermatology Group. “Sunscreen is no longer effective after a while, usually around 80-120 minutes. If you are exposed to significant UV rays indoors, it would be wise to reapply.

Part of the reason sunscreen loses its effectiveness is that sweating, swimming, and rubbing physically remove it from your skin. When you’re indoors, this is less likely to happen, keeping your sunscreen on your skin – where it’s supposed to be – for longer periods of time. But that doesn’t mean you can get away with not reapplying sunscreen at all. I recommend at least one mid-day reapplication. AT LEAST.

How can you prevent indoor sun damage?

I’m not suggesting that you stop sitting by windows or never get in a car again. Damn, where’s the fun in that? But before you do, you need to take a few steps to protect yourself:

  1. Wear sunscreen: All day, every day, even when you’re indoors. Make sure it is broad spectrum. Not all sunscreens protect against UVA rays – and they are the ones that get inside! Click here to find out which UV filters protect against UVA rays. (PS You can’t go wrong with zinc oxide).
  2. Window tint: Applying a UV protective film to your windows reduces UVA penetration by approximately 15-30%. I know that’s not always possible, especially in the office. But if that’s up to you, I highly recommend you consider it, especially for your car or if you live somewhere where the sun is scorching most of the year.

What are the best indoor sunscreens?

The best sunscreen is one that you will use and wear repeatedly. Period. That said, some formulas are indeed better than others. First, go for an SPF of at least 30. Anything lower doesn’t provide adequate sun protection. “If you have a history of skin cancer, get melasma or hyperpigmentation, or tend to burn quickly, you should consider an SPF of 65 or higher,” says Dr. Green.

Mineral sunscreens also have the advantage here of being able to protect you from blue light, a source of concern indoors. Just make sure to choose a formula that isn’t too greasy and won’t turn you into Caspar The Ghost. Here are some of my favorite picks:

  • Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 ($36.00): A tinted mineral sunscreen that protects you from all UV rays without leaving white marks. Best suited for dry skin. Available at Boots, cult beauty, NK spaceAnd Ultimate.
  • Paula’s Choice Defense Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF30 ($26.40): Suitable for all skin types, this tinted mineral sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection, fights premature wrinkles, and dries to a luminous finish. Available at cult beauty, Paula’s Choice, Sephora, SelfridgesAnd NK space.
  • Super goof! SPF 40 Mineral Matte Screen ($38.00): A mineral sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection and dries to a silky matte finish. It also minimizes the appearance of pores. It is best suited for oily and combination skin. Available at blue mercury, Nordström, TurnAnd Ultimate.

What if you don’t want to wear sunscreen indoors?

I am not your mother and you are not a child. If you don’t want to put sunscreen inside, I can’t force you to. But, I encourage you to protect yourself by avoiding the sun as much as possible indoors as well. How? Don’t spend time near large windows. If you must, draw the curtains. “If you’re just keeping out of the sunlight entering your windows, no other indoor precautions are necessary,” said said Kenneth Howe, MD, Wexler Dermatology Board Certified Dermatologist.

The essential

Although we all believe (we are, don’t we?) that we need to use sunscreen to protect our skin from UV damage outdoors, most people don’t realize that you must also wear sunscreen indoors. UVA rays can penetrate through windows and age you much faster than you would like. Add blue light from all the screens we use regularly and you have a recipe for premature aging. Wear your sunscreen inside too, ladies!

How much sunscreen should you use? – Beautiful with brains https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-much-sunscreen-should-you-use-beautiful-with-brains/ https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-much-sunscreen-should-you-use-beautiful-with-brains/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2023 12:53:40 +0000 https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-much-sunscreen-should-you-use-beautiful-with-brains/ [ad_1]

How much sunscreen should you use on your face and body each day to protect your skin from UV rays? I thought high FPS was enough. As long as I apply SPF 30 or more, no matter how much I apply, my skin will be well protected even in the scorching summer months. Boy, how wrong was I!

No matter how high your SPF is, quantity matters too. Don’t get me wrong, of course you want a high SPF. Anything below 30 is pretty much useless. BUT, here’s the catch: you could slather on SPF 100, but if you skimp on the application because the texture is greasy and unpleasant, it won’t protect your skin as well as you think. And then you wonder why you got sunburned when you were so careful!

It’s not the sunscreen’s fault. And frankly, it’s not your fault either. Everyone tells you to apply sunscreen generously but, in reality, how much does it cost? ! A thick layer? Half a teaspoon? You do a quick Google search and everyone has a different answer…. I’ve spoken to many dermatologists over the years and here’s how to answer the question, “How much sunscreen should you apply to your face and body each day?” Let’s find out:

How effective is your sunscreen? Sign up for the newsletter below to receive the “Sunscreen Audit” worksheet and find out if your sunscreen really measures up:

How much sunscreen do you really need to use on your face?

Did you know there’s a difference between how scientists test the effectiveness of sunscreens and how people use sunscreens in everyday life?

“To get the protection labeled on the product, you have to replicate the application they do in the lab, which is 2 milligrams per square centimeter for the average person. That translates to half a teaspoon on face and neck combined — a quarter of a teaspoon each” says board-certified dermatologist Ranella Hirsch. “People actually use about half that amount.”

If it’s too complicated to remember, here are some practical tips to certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick: “For the face, it is recommended to apply a dollop the size of a nickel – the equivalent of two finger lengths, which is also equivalent to half a teaspoon, on the face and neck combined .” It doesn’t matter if you use chemical or physical sunscreen, by the way. Always apply exactly this amount.

What if you use a stick sunscreen? I’m not a fan, but if you must use one, “apply four swipes back and forth, then swipe it in after for even coverage,” Garshick says. And the sprays? I do not recommend at all. They’re transparent, so it’s impossible to see if you’ve skipped a bit of skin. But, if you insist on using them, apply them until there is a visible sheen on the skin (you need to make sure every inch of skin is covered!).

How much sunscreen do you need for your body?

You should always apply 2 mg per cm2 because this is how scientists test the effectiveness of your sunscreen. But how much does it cost your body? When you go to the beach, you just want to apply sunscreen, not do math equations in your head, you know what I mean?

2mg per cm2 translates to 1 teaspoon per arm and leg each, front and back“, Hirsch said. What about the whole body? This time, Garshick comes to the rescue, explaining that it’s “the equivalent of a body shot glass or two tablespoons.”

SUMMARY

Here is how much 2 mg per cm2 represents in real life:

  • Face only: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Face and neck: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Arm: 1 teaspoon each
  • The whole body: a shot glass

WARNING! These are general guidelines. If you have a larger than average face, you will need a little more. If you have a smaller face, you’ll need a little less.

Related: Are you applying sunscreen the right way?

How much SPF do you get if you apply less?

Rumor has it that if you apply half the amount of sunscreen you need to stay safe in the sun, you’ll only get the protection of the square root of the SPF. So an SPF 70 turns into an SPF 8.4! Scientists calculated it with the Beer-Lambert law, a physical law that says protection decreases exponentially with less sunscreen. Michelle from Lab Muffin has a great article on this.if you are interested in the science behind this law.

But, I’ll keep it simple for you. Scientists have used this law to theoretically judge the amount of application affected by SPF. Until someone, somewhere decided to put this law to the test. Do you know what they discovered? The latest research shows that with less application, SPF decreases linearly, not exponentially.

In other words, applying half the recommended amount gives you half the SPF. So an SPF 50 becomes an SPF 25. That’s more like it, isn’t it? But don’t use that excuse to apply less sunscreen now. What’s the point of buying SPF 50 if you’re not getting the full protection?

Best Sunscreen Picks

Not sure which sunscreen to use? Here are my favorite sunscreens for every skin type and need:

  • Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 ($36.00): A tinted mineral sunscreen that protects you from all UV rays without leaving white marks. Best suited for dry skin. Available at Boots, cult beauty, NK SpaceAnd Ultimate.
  • La Roche Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sun Cream SPF 60 ($19.99): Ideal for oily skin, this lightweight sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection and absorbs excess oil for a matte finish. Available at Boots, dermstore, La Roche-PosayAnd Ultimate.
  • Paula’s Choice Defense Essential Glow Moisturizer SPF30 ($26.40): Suitable for all skin types, this tinted mineral sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection, fights premature wrinkles, and dries to a luminous finish. Available at cult beauty, Paula’s Choice, Sephora, SelfridgesAnd NK space.
  • Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion Wide Spectrum SPF 50+ WetForce for Sensitive Skin & Kids ($42.00): A broad-spectrum, high-SPF protective formula that’s gentle enough even for children and sensitive skin. It is water resistant for up to 80 minutes. Available at Sephora And Ultimate.
  • Ultrasun Ultra Sensitive Very High SPF50+ Extreme Formula (£30.00): This sunscreen uses the next generation of chemical filters to provide broad-spectrum protection without irritation. Also suitable for sensitive skin. Available at Boots, SephoraAnd Spacen K.

The essential

If you want the protection that SPF promises you, you need to apply sunscreen the same way researchers test it to determine that SPF in the first place. Simply put, you should use 1/2 teaspoon for your face and neck and a shot glass for your whole body.

In regards to 60% of the human body is made up of water. Even more surprising, water constitutes 90% of blood plasma. Water is essential for life, but it also has a significant impact on the health of your skin. Staying hydrated helps flush toxins from the body while stimulating blood flow to the skin. It helps improve skin tone, prevents premature aging and prevents skin from drying out and itching.

Even if you stay hydrated by drinking water, your skin could probably use some extra moisture to keep it soft and supple. This is where moisturizers come in. Moisturizers are available in different textures like creams or fluids.

Keeping your skin hydrated is essential, but choosing the right product can be a challenge. Here we are going to discuss the difference between hydration and hydration. Understanding the difference will let you know if a fluid or cream moisturizer is best for your skin.

Hydration vs Hydration

Although the words hydration and hydration are often used interchangeably in the skincare industry, there is a difference between the two. Both products help ensure skin gets the water it needs to prevent dehydration and fight aging and environmental damage. The difference is in how they go about achieving those goals.

The term hydration refers to the water content of cells. Water causes cells to swell, helping skin retain its suppleness. When water drains from skin cells, they become dehydrated, resulting in a dull complexion. A topical moisturizer, called a humectant, infuses skin cells with water and boosts its ability to absorb moisture and essential nutrients.

Hydration, in comparison, is all about trapping water in the skin. It’s about building and protecting the skin’s natural protective barrier to prevent water loss. It also helps keep your skin soft and smooth. Nourishing ingredients, called emollients, are used to prevent water loss and maintain a healthy barrier.

Which do you need?

All skin types need both hydration and hydration, although one may take priority over the other for some skin types.

For example, if you have dry skin (skin that lacks oil), rebalancing both moisture and lipids is important. A good moisturizer can help prevent transepidermal water loss. It can restore the healthy barrier and plumpness of the skin. If your skin is dehydrated (lack of water), however, focusing on humectants is more likely to be beneficial. Your skin cells need to absorb more water. As a reminder, any skin type can suffer from dehydration, while lipid balancing will vary by skin type.

If you struggle with dullness or visible signs of aging, your skin is probably struggling with dehydration. When skin cells lack water, they lose volume and shrivel up, which can exacerbate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and affect your complexion.

Yon-Ka Fluid vs Cream

Whether you’re concerned about hydration or hydration (or both), Yon-Ka Paris offers a wide variety of products suitable for different skin types. Two of the most popular products in this category are fluids and creams.

Yon-Ka fluids are lightweight with a finer texture than creams. Fluids focus more on moisturizing, less on moisturizing and adding lipids to the skin. Therefore, they are rich in humectants, less in emollients. They are an excellent choice for combination skin as well as oily skin because they are very light and non-oily. Yon-Ka creams are heavier than fluids, making them ideal for dry and/or mature skin. They also work well for cold, dry weather protection. Creams address both hydration and hydration. They also focus more on treating the skin with humectants and emollients.

Check out some of Yon-Ka’s most popular fluids and creams…

  • Hydra N°1 Fluid – Ideal for oily and dehydrated skin, this lightweight moisturizer helps to mattify the skin. It contains micro- and macro-hyaluronic acid to boost hydration levels over time as well as silica to control excessive sebum production.
  • Alpha-Fluid – This regenerating anti-wrinkle day emulsion is light and easily absorbed by the skin to smooth, hydrate and protect. It is supplemented with vitamin E and rice bran oil to protect against environmental damage as well as AHAs for renewal.
  • Nude Perfect Fluid – If you struggle with the clarity of your skin, this blurring cream is exactly what you need. It features an ultra-lightweight formula that instantly smoothes the appearance of pores, skin imperfections, fine lines, and wrinkles to promote flawless-looking skin.
  • Advanced Optimization Cream – This firming anti-aging cream lifts and firms the skin while providing a fortifying effect to protect against the progression of skin damage associated with aging. Milk proteins and shea butter intensely nourish for long-lasting suppleness.
  • Hydra Cream N°1 – This intense moisturizing cream is enriched with two forms of hyaluronic acid to prevent water loss from dry and dehydrated skin. It contains soothing shea butter and hazelnut oil to combat dryness and restore skin’s natural youthful glow.
  • Excellence Code Cream – A multifunctional cream for mature, hormone-weary skin in need of revitalization. It contains three exclusive botanical complexes to fortify the moisture barrier, effectively firm and smooth the skin and improve overall radiance.

Whatever your skin type, Yon-Ka Paris offers a wide range of moisturizers including fluids and creams.

When you start shopping, keep in mind that fluids and serums are not the same thing. Although similarly packaged in pumps, serums are even finer than fluids, which allows them to penetrate the skin to provide the benefits of specific active ingredients. Serums are meant to be applied under your favorite Yon-Ka moisturizer.

When it comes to clearing pores and balancing oil production, exfoliation is an essential part of any skincare routine. However, after cleansing, toning and exfoliating, it is important to hydrate and protect the skin. There are countless products on the market that deliver these benefits individually, but there’s also one ingredient that delivers a double hit of exfoliation AND hydration: lactic acid.

Lactic acid plays several key roles in supporting the function of cells, tissues and organs in the body. It is an energy source for mitochondria, a signaling molecule and a precursor to glucose production.

What does this have to do with skin care?

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) commonly used in over-the-counter skincare products to slough off dead skin cells, correct hyperpigmentation, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Here’s everything you need to know about lactic acid in skincare.

What is lactic acid?

As mentioned earlier, lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid – one of the most popular over-the-counter AHAs, in fact. It is also used in professional-grade spa products. This AHA offers both exfoliating and moisturizing benefits – it may even stimulate collagen production.

Before lactic acid was incorporated into modern skincare products, it was used worldwide for skincare in its most natural form. Dairy products are rich in lactic acid. This is what gives curds their distinctive smell and flavor. Milk baths have long been a popular treatment for softening and beautifying the skin. Today, however, lactic acid can be found in many care products.

What benefits does it have for the skin?

The main benefits of lactic acid for the skin are related to its exfoliating and moisturizing properties. What makes this AHA so popular is the fact that it can facilitate a noticeable skin change when used regularly. It is also one of the mildest hydroxy acids found in skin care products.

Here is an overview of some of the benefits this AHA can provide:

  • Lactic acid helps remove dead cells from the surface of the skin by dissolving the bonds that hold them together, i.e. it acts as an exfoliant.
  • It can reduce the visible signs of aging by stimulating collagen turnover when used regularly.
  • This AHA accelerates cell renewal and cell renewal. It can give you a brighter complexion with smoother, softer skin by replacing old cells with new cells.
  • Lactic acid helps strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier to protect against dry skin.
  • It may be beneficial for people struggling with keratosis pilaris. It helps dissolve the plugs that form around the hair follicle, creating “chicken skin” bumps.

Although lactic acid is milder than many AHAs, it is still a very powerful treatment and should be used with caution. Potential side effects include sun sensitivity, skin irritation, redness, burning, or swelling. People with very sensitive skin should avoid lactic acid and this AHA should not be combined with the use of topical retinoids.

Popular Yon-Ka products containing lactic acid

Lactic acid can be found in several types of skin care products. Leave-in treatments such as creams, serums, and lotions containing lactic acid should be used as directed to prevent sun damage, and daily wearing of sunscreen is a must. If you’re looking for a stronger dose, try a peel or mask.

Here are some popular Yon-Ka products containing lactic acid to consider:

  • Alpha-Peel – This concentrated anti-wrinkle night gel helps refine, refresh and revitalize the complexion overnight. The lactic acid contained in the product offers exfoliating benefits that combine perfectly with the regenerating and moisturizing benefits of Alpha-Fluid
  • Clear Essential White Solution – Formulated to treat dark spots and pigmentation, this solution is a lightening and exfoliating treatment. The lactic acid it contains is included for its exfoliating benefits and to help even out skin tone. For best results, use in conjunction with the Essential White product collection.
  • JuvenileThis anti-blemish purifying concentrate offers a balanced approach to treating blemishes. The lactic acid in this product acts as a post-biotic to help balance skin pH and support healthy microflora.
  • SOS Point – Designed as a roll-on treatment, this product purifies the skin of acne-causing bacteria and provides post-biotic benefits to protect healthy skin microflora. The lactic acid in this product also helps balance pH of the skin.
  • Hydra+ Booster – Moisturizer for all skin types, this booster is meant to be added to your usual moisturizer. The lactic acid in this product helps soften and moisturize the skin.

Please consult your Trained Beautician Yon-Ka for the best recommendations on how to use lactic acid in your skincare routine.

How witch hazel can benefit oily or irritated skin https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-witch-hazel-can-benefit-oily-or-irritated-skin/ https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-witch-hazel-can-benefit-oily-or-irritated-skin/#respond Fri, 07 Jul 2023 08:19:05 +0000 https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-witch-hazel-can-benefit-oily-or-irritated-skin/ [ad_1]

From beauty to medicine, witch hazel is an ingredient with multiple uses and a long history. Before modern medicine, it was used to soothe wounds and promote healing. A few centuries later, you might remember stories of people using Preparation H hemorrhoid cream, which contains witch hazel, to fight bags under the eyes! (Spoiler alert: I don’t recommend it. The eye area is extremely sensitive and should only be exposed to products formulated specifically for this purpose.)

In recent years, witch hazel has been relegated as an old-school ingredient that can cause dryness or irritation. It seems like everyone has come to fear this ingredient, but I think that’s just misunderstood! Witch hazel can have benefits for almost any skin type, it’s just a matter of finding a well-formulated product. Witch hazel itself hasn’t changed over the years, but the way we use it has definitely changed. Skincare products are now designed to be much gentler, taking into account the skin’s protective barrier. With more advanced extraction techniques, you can reap the therapeutic benefits of witch hazel without the downsides. Witch hazel is making a comeback, and it’s here to deliver some serious benefits in more ways than one! Keep scrolling to find out how it could benefit your skin (and how to avoid any possible downsides).

What is witch hazel and where does it come from?

Witch hazel, or Hamamelis Virginianal, is a tree extract commonly used in cosmetics. It is native to Canada and the eastern United States, but globalization has also made it possible to cultivate it in Europe. Extraction is usually done by blowing parts of the tree (such as leaves, bark, and roots) with carbon dioxide. This stressor causes the plant to excrete an oil, which then leaves behind a watery substance that is essentially witch hazel essence. This water or “essence” is the one that is used in your cosmetics.

Witch hazel has been around for hundreds of years, finding it useful not only in skin care but also in healing wounds. Native Americans used it to soothe sores and irritations, and it is now used as a vasoconstrictor in modern medicine.

When it comes to skin care, we mainly use witch hazel for its astringent effect. This happens because of molecules called tannins, which cause skin proteins to tighten. This helps tighten pores and is also what aids in healing.

Will witch hazel dry out my skin?

The astringent effect of witch hazel is exactly what makes people worry that it will dry out their skin. Many of us associate the word “astringent” with the super drying toners of the 90s. The thing to understand is that if a substance is astringent, it just means that it causes a slight contraction (i.e. a tightening) of skin tissue when applied. People often associate this feeling of tightness with dryness, but in this case, that’s not necessarily accurate. It is true that if your pores are contracted, less sebum will pass through them. But if you’re trying to control excess fat, that’s a plus!

The problem with these toners in the 90s was that they often contained drying alcohols in addition to being astringent. This is ultimately what dried out people’s skin and caused irritation. There was a time when so many clients who came to my spa used a very popular 3-step skin care system that included an astringent toner. But in addition to including drying alcohols, this toner also contained acetone (yes, you read that right). I literally used it to remove my nail polish to show clients how hard it was.

The bottom line is that witch hazel is a great ingredient for both soothing and reducing excess oil production. As always, it’s all about finding a properly formulated product.

What should you look for when buying witch hazel products?

When looking for products containing witch hazel, it is essential to keep in mind that the method of extraction can significantly affect its properties. Some extractions may involve alcohol or have a high alcohol content, depending on the reason for the extraction. This ultimately means that some products will have alcohol on the ingredient list. So the first thing to do when beginning your search for the perfect witch hazel product is to check the ingredient list for drying alcohols such as SD 40 alcohol or denatured alcohol. Avoid these.

Keep in mind that part of what gave witch hazel such an undeserved stigma in the 90s was that toners were made using it at (or near) 100% concentration. You don’t need to worry about that now. Nowadays, when witch hazel is used in a product, it is a small component of a product’s overall formulation. It is only there to provide very mild astringency or anti-inflammatory properties. These days, most products also contain moisturizing ingredients, such as glycerin, in conjunction with witch hazel. This creates the perfect balance and compensates for any possible dryness.

As I always say, you shouldn’t judge a product by its ingredient label! In most cases, a single ingredient does not make or break a product. It all depends on the quality of an ingredient, how much it is used in a product, and how it is combined with other ingredients.

Who should use witch hazel?

Due to the astringent effects of witch hazel, I highly recommend this ingredient for skin types 1-4. Those with oily, acne-prone skin will benefit the most from its oil-reducing abilities. Since acne is an inflammatory condition, these skin types will also benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties of witch hazel.

In addition to curbing sebum production, remember that oily skin still needs hydration. Here is five ways to safely hydrate acne-prone skin.

Now, that’s not to say that those with dry skin can’t benefit from witch hazel as well. This multifaceted ingredient can also provide wonderful benefits such as antioxidant and soothing qualities, as well as the wound healing abilities I mentioned earlier. It all depends on the percentage of witch hazel present, as well as whether there are other ingredients added to help combat its drying effects. JHere are several formulas containing witch hazel that add ingredients like humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin, etc.) to help draw water to the skin and keep it hydrated.

How can you incorporate this ingredient into your daily routine?

Tonic

The most classic method of delivering witch hazel to the skin is by using a toner. A gentle leave-in formulation, like Balancing skin toneris a great option because molecules from water-based skincare products can penetrate deeper into the skin than molecules from thicker products.

Face masks

If you’re not currently on the hunt for a new toner, there are plenty of other ways to incorporate witch hazel into your routine. It can be a great addition to face masks. Witch Hazel and other pore-purifying extracts work together in Energizing Cleansing Mask to leave skin feeling tighter, firmer and refreshed. The combination of antioxidants and nourishing botanicals allows this non-drying clay mask to deliver cleaner pores and more refined skin.

moisturizer

Another great way to reap the benefits of witch hazel is to use a moisturizer like Daily Matifying Solution. The blend of witch hazel and moisturizing ingredients is ideal for very oily skin, such as Skin type 1who need hydration and oil control.

If you were confused about the negativity surrounding witch hazel, I hope this article helps put your mind at rest! This ingredient has a long heritage in the skincare community and is just one of many fantastic ingredients in any product formulator’s toolbox. It’s time to stop getting caught up in witch hazel’s troublesome past (and slightly creepy name) and start cheering on its well-deserved comeback.

Then learn more about the most efficient way to apply toner.

How to clean makeup brushes with your face wash https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-to-clean-makeup-brushes-with-your-face-wash/ https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-to-clean-makeup-brushes-with-your-face-wash/#respond Fri, 07 Jul 2023 07:57:48 +0000 https://unitedcarehealth.com/how-to-clean-makeup-brushes-with-your-face-wash/ [ad_1]

If you do makeup frequently, you probably have a collection of makeup brushes that serve a variety of purposes. From foundation to blush, contour, eyeshadow, eyeliner, it seems like every step of our beauty routine requires a different brush style (or maybe you’re a one-brush girl – I’m not judging!).

To clean makeup brushes, my go-to is the Protective cleaner against moisture.
