If you know me, you know that my whole approach to cooking and nutrition is about making food as simple as possible while using real ingredients. For me, it all comes down to how we eat – our energy, our sanity, our sleep, how we show up in life, our mood, how we feel in our bodies. It all comes down to what we eat and fuel our bodies (and brains).
But I don’t have endless time to cook gourmet farm-to-table meals every day (and I have a feeling you don’t either). I like my meals to be fast, efficient and tasty – so I can still enjoy REAL life without worrying about having a healthy dinner on the table for my family.
Learning to cook in this way has changed my life. I save time, but I can still feel so good about the foods we serve and eat every day at home. But, I can’t do it alone.
I found a selection of healthy kitchen supplies that make it easy to prepare quick and healthy meals. And people ask me all the time what my favorite kitchen utensils, blender or knives are, so I thought it was time to put it all together in one concise place for anyone curious!
A few things to note–
I’m not a fan of Teflon or non-stick items. I am also generally wary of all new “green” non-stick products too. I stick to stainless and my lodge cast iron skillet for 99% of the cooking. Yes, you have to use olive oil or butter to make sure things don’t stick, but that’s a good thing from a real food perspective. Healthy fats are always a yes in my book.
I also like quality and multi-purpose things. For this reason, I’m not a big fan of tons of devices (especially single-purpose ones). I would much rather invest in a high quality item like a blender that I can use in many ways and lasts forever. This saves a lot of space in the kitchen and helps simplify mealtimes.
Some of my ALL TIME favorite staple foods and healthy daily kitchen supplies:
- My stainless steel pan (my daily matcha jar): I use every day– IFYYK this pan! I’ve had it for decades and use it daily, first always to make my matcha, to heat up soup, for almost everything. It’s the PERFECT size – not too small, not too big. I love that it’s stainless steel (meaning no chemicals added to the cooking surface).
- 10 and 12 inch stainless steel fry pans: the 10 inch is perfect for eggs in the morning and for warming up small things. The 12 is perfect for pancakes! Or if you’re looking for a new set, the small and large set are amazing (we have the small, it was a wedding gift that just keeps on giving!).
- Toaster oven (mini oven): we don’t have a microwave and just got it last year to heat things up quicker (ie less than 5 minutes), especially with 2 kids. It heats up immediately and although it takes up space I would say we use it at least 4 times a day! I took this one because it was one of the only ones available in white. 🙂
- Electric whisk and drink frother (rechargeable via USB): the best when I travel to make my matcha without a blender. Or at home too, especially for ice cream.
- Vitamix Blender: hAnd it’s the best investment I’ve ever made both in my kitchen and in my health and that of my family. Smoothies galore, healthy one-minute muffin/pancake batters, soups and more. I’ve had mine for over 15 years and it’s still a total workhorse.
- Stainless steel cooking plates (large ones) or the smaller (paired with natural parchment paper): for roasting vegetables, making scones, cookies, etc. and quick dishes on the plate. They are the best. And I love that they are non-stick!
- The instant pot: yes, the craze I’ve turned down for so long that has now been my weeknight partner in getting a hot meal on the table in less than 25 minutes (usually closer to 15 minutes). If you’re in charge of cooking for people, this tool has honestly been a game-changer for me. Perfect rice, pulled chicken, soups/stews, beans and lentils that are MUCH easier for your body to digest (and much cheaper when you cook them dried)…. everything comes out fast!
