Mmm, summer reading. It’s the best kind of feeling! Am I just getting old? Maybe…. but I’m HERE for you guys.
There’s nothing better than the slow, hot days of summer, which makes it so much easier to escape into a book, even in small moments.
Double that during summer vacation or weekends (or even just weekends in your own backyard). And in case nothing resets your soul like a bit of sunshine and a good book (like me), we’ve got a little treat for you today – a verified list, so you don’t have to spend hours search this summer. So you can relax instead.
So whether you’re escaping to the beach this summer or just looking for an exciting new bedtime read, here are some of the SRH team and my favorite books of recent times, Summer Reading Club edition.
SRH Team Summer Reading Recs:
Sarah’s picks:
- between sisters by Kristin Hannah: currently midway through and loving it. The story of two sisters, motherhood, heartbreak and finding their own path in life after a difficult upbringing. This one is a little lighter than Hannah’s usual shredders, and I loved it for that reason.
- summer island by Kristin Hannah: a great lighter summer beach read, set in the PNW San Juan Islands. I’m on a Kristin Hannah bender if you can’t tell (The Great Alone, The Nightingale and The Four Winds are all too good too)
- The Nantucket Hotel by Elin Hilderbrand: a charming read about a remodeled old hotel on Nantucket Island. All of the staff (and some guests) have such interesting stories that intersect in mysterious ways. A great beach read!
- magic of time by Melissa Ambrosini and Nick Broadhurst: you know, I always have to add a little personal development in the mix (usually in audio format). And I loved the reminders (and new advice I received) in this one about time, doing more for what matters, and making things simpler, in so many areas of life.
Melissa’s picks:
- Remarkably bright creatures by Shelby Van Pelt: The author’s debut novel is a touching and unexpected story (read: one of the protagonists is an octopus) that explores the depths of grief and how looking at one’s past can help uncover a future that once seemed impossible. It was a nice read.
- crazy honey by Jodi Picoult & Jennifer Finney Boylan: (taken from Melissa) RReading this book kept me on the edge of my seat to see a tragic murder solved, and struck me in so many ways as a mother. Definitely a page-turner. (Taken from Jordyn) This has been my most popular read of the year. There’s not much I can say without slipping in some crucial storyline spoilers, but wow, this was a truly powerful, moving, and beautiful read. One of those books that will linger with you for a while! The story was about coming of age/young love, the power of love and the resilience of a mother, and the drama of the courtroom. I was really immersed in the story and so sad when I put it down.
- happy place by Emily Henry: Emily Henry has quickly become my favorite romance author for light and enjoyable reads that go by quickly. His latest release is no exception! The story of a close-knit group of friends and a breakup within them that threatens to ruin everything. Good amount of steam 🙂
- Carrie Soto is back by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Ok, although I may not really know anything about tennis, the story transcends the sport. It was a compelling story about the cost and pressures of greatness, the double standard women often face in terms of likability, and how far a person can go to protect what they consider their heritage.
- spells to forget by Adrienne Young: Set in the Pacific Northwest on a fictional island, this story is a murder mystery, with folklore, magic, and secrets. It was a gripping read that I couldn’t put down.
- No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model by Dr. Richard C. Schwartz: IFS offers an exciting new way to understand our multi-faceted mind and how to heal the many parts of us that make us who we are. I highly recommend the audiobook version where Dr. Schwartz narrates the different exercises.
Jordyn’s Picks:
- The things we leave unfinished by Rebecca Yarros: This book completely blew me away! I like a love book that jumps from one timeline to another and interweaves the connections and love stories at the end. And, I’m also officially a sucker for a love book ABOUT a love book. The current timeline follows Georgia as she goes through the process of publishing her great-grandmother’s love book about her life and the past timeline follows Scarlett, Georgia’s great-grandmother, during the war. . (This is your fair warning that half the book focuses on a wartime romance…so you know your heart will be torn to small shreds. But can’t we all agree that a perfect romance book will ruin you and you? leaves sore sorry?)
- Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros: Can you say I’m the new Rebecca Yarros fan? The second I put down “Things We Leave Unfinished”, I discovered that Yarros had recently published a fantastic book. I am currently consumed by this reading! I’m eating the latest fantasy romance trend and “Fourth Wing” ticks all the boxes for me. This book explores the brutal world of a university of warfare for dragon riders…and of course, the focus is equally on friends, foes, and lovers.
- Meet me at the lake by Carley Fortune: Last summer, I devoured Carley Fortune’s debut novel “Every Summer After,” so it only makes sense that I saved her second book to dive into soon. Fortune has a path from childhood friends to love stories and I’m excited to see what she explores in her latest book!
- Back home by Kate Morton: This thriller/mystery book is also sitting on my bedside table, ready to read this summer. “Homecoming” follows a journalist who moves out when her grandmother is taken to the hospital and she comes across a real crime book that chronicles the police investigation into one of the most puzzling murder cases. She (of course!) finds shocking links between her own family and this cold case…
